Functional Safety and SIL Training Course for Instrument Technicians in 61511

Fundamental knowledge of Functional Safety and SIL, with a focus on the construction, operations and maintenance phases of the safety lifecycle

The Solution =Method
16 cpd hours for SIS hardware DesignBrochure (PDF)

A 2-day course providing Instrument, Electrical and Control Technicians with fundamental knowledge of Functional Safety and SIL, with a focus on the construction, operations and maintenance phases of the safety lifecycle, where EC&I Technicians typically have tasks and responsibilities.

This course provides a broad introduction to functional safety management in accordance with IEC 61511 and develops deeper knowledge of the project engineering design, construction and validation, operations and maintenance phases of the functional safety lifecycle. These are all key areas relevant to the technician’s role.

This learning is delivered through classroom discussions and activities, videos and group exercises, using real-world scenarios.

Course Content

Part 1: Introduction to Functional Safety

This section of the course introduces the concept of Functional Safety, relevant legislation, and the Functional Safety lifecycle and its contents. It then goes on to discuss hazards, risk, and how SIFs are identified, quantified and mitigated.

Part 2: Engineering Design

Although Technicians are not generally involved in Functional Safety engineering design, decisions made during this phase of projects have a significant impact on proof testing and maintenance tasks throughout the lifecycle.

This section of the course introduces device selection, reliability calculations and voting arrangements. The decisions Technicians make later in the life of the plant, when maintaining equipment, and how these can impact assumptions made during the design phase, are also explored.

Part 3: Installation, Commissioning & Validation

This section discusses the requirements for the installation, commissioning and validation of Safety Instrumented Functions. The differences between validation testing and proof testing are explored.

Part 4: Operations & Maintenance

As this is the phase of the Functional Safety lifecycle in which technicians work, this section covers in detail:

  • End-to-end proof testing, partial proof testing, mission time and useful life
  • Inspection, routine maintenance and breakdowns
  • Maintenance of other layers of protection, including non-instrumented systems
  • Use of bypasses and other overrides
  • Risks associated with modifications
  • Documentation and record keeping
  • Maintenance planning

Who should attend

This course is targeted at Instrument, Electrical & Control Technicians working with SIFs in construction, plant maintenance or plant support roles, as well as EC&I Supervisors, chargehands and planners.

The course is also suitable for apprentices, graduates, E,C&I Engineers, operations support engineers, and mechanical technicians and engineers.

However, our Introduction to Functional Safety or Functional Safety for Operators courses may be more appropriate for non-EC&I disciplines, while our TÜV 61511 course may be more suitable for EC&I Engineers.

Please contact our training team to discuss your requirements further.

Pre-qualification and Certification

There are no formal prerequisites for attending this training. Delegates who attend will be awarded either an FSAwareness or FSComp Certificate.

FSAwareness

The FSAwareness Certificate is awarded to those who complete the course and pass the assessment but do not yet meet the eligibility requirements for the FSComp Certificate. This recognises successful completion of the training and assessment but does not confirm practitioner experience.

FSComp

The FSComp Certificate is awarded to those who complete the course, pass the assessment, and meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • A prior technical qualification in process control and instrumentation/electronics (e.g. NVQ Level 3, HNC/HND, or a degree in a relevant engineering discipline).
  • A minimum of four years' relevant industry experience, including at least one year's experience as a practitioner in the field.

Delegates who are initially awarded an FSAwareness Certificate may upgrade to an FSComp Certificate once they have met the required qualification and industry experience criteria.

Assessment

Your learning is continuously assessed throughout the 2-day course.

Following the training, there is a short written assessment consisting of five questions. Each question presents the candidate with a typical technician scenario and asks what action should be taken next, allowing candidates to apply their learning.

Delegates must achieve a minimum of 70% to pass the assessment.

After this training course you will

  • Have an appreciation of Functional Safety, the Functional Safety lifecycle and its relevance to your role.
  • Understand the importance of compliance and working safely during the operate, maintain and repair stages of the Functional Safety lifecycle.
  • Understand why Functional Safety should be considered during the modification process.

What you will get

  • The course materials.
  • An FSComp certificate if you pass the assessment and meet the experience requirements (valid for 5 years).
  • An FSAwareness certificate if you pass the assessment but do not meet the experience requirements.
  • A certificate of attendance.

TUV 61511 course rating

I gained a lot of knowledge.

Absolutely no understanding before so was a good first opener to the FS world.

Gained a load of knowledge to put to use with the work im currently doing out on plant.

Lot more knowledgeable and I am able to talk about functional safety.

It gave me a better understanding into the FS lifecycle and how it fits together.
