Brochure (PDF)
4 x 4-hour sessions designed to help you understand SIS Hardware Design as per IEC 61511.
This course teaches you how to demonstrate that SIFs are SIL compliant, including calculating Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD) and Spurious Trip Rate.
The training reviews the detail of SIS design (Clause 11 of IEC 61511) and explores how product suppliers can (and should) demonstrate compliance with IEC 61508. Additionally, the training looks at Proven-in-Use and Prior-Use demonstration of product compliance.
Note from the trainer – this is one for the nerds. It’s a potentially dry topic, and not the easiest to deliver in an entertaining way, but if your role is SIS Hardware Design (or SIL Verification) this will deliver an essential element of competence required to do such work. The "recent delegate comments" give you a good sense of what the course delivers.
The standard course is a single half-day and covers the essential elements of the functional safety lifecycle and functional safety management.
Course Content
- The Safety Requirements Specification
- Appointing third-party suppliers (such as Systems Integrators)
- Detail of Clause 11 of IEC 61511 – SIS Design
- Product development as per IEC 61508
- Calculating Probability of Failure on Demand and Spurious Trip Rate
- Determining Beta Factor
- Proven in Use and Prior Use demonstrations
Who should attend
Engineers involved in the design, verification or assessment of SIS Design to IEC 61511.
Pre-qualification
This course assumes you are knowledgeable in the field of functional safety in general and have a background knowledge of SIS Design.
It is suitable for those who already hold qualifications such as TUV Functional Safety Professional or Functional Safety Engineer.
Course Format
This course is delivered over four mornings, with day 3 dedicated to self-study. This gives delegates time to review the course content and complete the set exercises before the final live online session. We recommend allowing approximately 4 hours for self-study and homework.
What you should bring
One of the course objectives is to develop a workable understanding of how to evaluate the “certification” of “SIL” products. Delegates are invited to “bring their own devices” to use as worked examples in reviewing product certification. Documentation such as the “SIL Certificate”, Safety Manual and Report to the Certificate (if available) would facilitate this. Delegates will be invited to submit such documentation prior to the start of the training.
After this course you will be able to:
Be confident in understanding the requirements of SIS Design as per IEC 61511. Such confidence would be required by SIS Designers and those involved in SIL Verification and is part of the competence requirements for those carrying out Stage 2 Functional Safety Assessments.
What you will get
All delegates receive:
- The course material in printed format.
- A Certificate of Attendance for attending the full course (16 hours of CPD).
Course Options
Live Online
The course is delivered as 4 x 4-hour sessions plus 1 x 4 hour self-study. Usually mornings over a single week.

Delegate comments
In course feedback our delegates rated this course 83.7%. See recent comments below, or more comments here.
I have gained a better understanding on Beta factor, PFD and budject calculations.
Great insight into what makes a well designed SIF and the certification 'snifftest' is quite eye-opening!
I would highly recommend, not only this course but any Method course. The team is always very knowledgeable and caring about the usefulness of what is being covered to the people attending.
I feel more confident with SIS design and it has shown me what areas are important.
Doing worked examples and looking through certs really helped understand it all.
